As large modern day Europe and centered in the mythical city of Timbuktu, the Manding Empire existed as early as A.D. 1000 as a cultural crossroads for songs, dances, instruments, costumes and customs. Spreading these traditions to the far corners of the great Empire, the Mandé speaking people now span countries throughout French West Africa – Mali, Guinea, Gambia, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Guinea Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierra Leone – and Manding music and dance predominates the national cultural troupes of these countries. Manding Jata’s energetic and exciting drumming, dance and acrobatics reveal the colorful cultural legacy of this great civilization, the largest Empire in African history.
